Finding sustainable and cost-effective methods of heating water and creating comfortable home, work and play environments has been a hot topic for some years now. A heat pump is one way to solve this issue – and this is a system that the Maungatapere Valley Aquatic Centre has adopted to heat its pools and tackle indoor pool condensation.
A simple complex
Carolyn Younger wanted to provide swimming lessons for her local community in Maungatapere, and needed to create a facility from scratch to house her swimming pool complex. After finding a builder, she contacted Don Trigg at Hot Water Heat Pumps Ltd, having worked with him on heating an outdoor pool some years before. When they spoke, she was only looking at options to heat two pools.
Don and the team took a step back from the brief and looked at the project as a whole, before coming up with a plan to supply domestic hot water for the showers, underfloor heating for the changing rooms, and air heating in the form of a Vent-Air Heat Recovery, Condensation Control and Air Distribution system.
Don comments, “We custom designed and installed a Performance Plus Heat Pump and Vent-Air Heat Recovery, with Condensation Control System for the centre. The Performance Plus heat pump keeps the water at 28°C in the main pool and 32°C in the learner's pool.
The Performance Plus heat pump was specifically engineered to heat both pools, the air, the floors in the changing rooms, and the water for the showers. Each function heats at the same level of efficiency, as though there was an individual heat pump on each job, when it is in fact just one unit. With the added heat recovery in the indoor environment, running costs are reduced even further. Manipulating the airflow through the enclosure to reduce condensation and evaporation allows patrons to feel comfortable."
Creative problem solving
Carolyn Younger, her team and her swimming students are delighted with the results, she says, “During the summer months, the heat recovery system that Don fitted means that ambient air from outside is used to heat the indoor pools. This has without doubt saved us thousands of dollars in power costs.
The excellent facilities which Don helped to create mean that we now have about 300-400 people through the doors every week. We teach a wide range of people to swim, from 6 month old babies to adults who are 60 plus.
Don has been awesome. He’s been like a father figure to me in giving his time, advice and help to get my swimming school up and running. Even now, if there’s a problem I call him and he drops by to resolve the issue. I can’t recommend Don and his team highly enough.”
